Lucas was established in 1872, the same year that the petrol engine was first patented, The first Mercedes ‘horseless carriage’ was still 14 years away and the Ford Model T wouldn’t appear for a further 27 years.

The dynamo/starter factory (Branch Works 3) in Shaftmoor Lane had formally been EIC Magnetos and was acquired by Lucas in 1925. In October 1987 the factory was sold to Magneti Marelli and in 1999 was sold again to Denso.

Shaftmoor Properties Limited Partnership bought the site in 2008 and are now looking forward to developing the site over two phases into a Morrisons food store, a 278 bed ExtraCare village and approximately120 family homes.

Our intention is to retain the heritage of the Lucas name with the store and village in having Lucas images along the Spring Road elevation. If you have any suggestions please comment here.
